Modifier 80 is used to identify a physician who provides full assistant surgeon services during a surgical procedure

What is Modifier 80?

Modifier 80 indicates that another physician actively assisted the primary surgeon throughout a surgical procedure. The assistant surgeon performs more than incidental or observational duties and provides hands-on surgical assistance when the complexity of the operation requires an additional physician. Modifier 80 is reported by the assistant surgeon on the same procedure code billed by the primary surgeon, when allowed by payer policy. Non-physician practitioners generally report Modifier AS rather than Modifier 80.

When to Use Modifier 80

• A physician provides full assistant surgeon services during an eligible procedure.

• The complexity of the surgery requires an assistant surgeon.

• The assistant actively participates throughout the operation.

• Payer guidelines allow assistant surgeon reimbursement.

An orthopedic surgeon performs a complex spinal fusion requiring a second physician to assist throughout the procedure. The assistant surgeon reports the same procedure code with Modifier 80 to identify the assistant-at-surgery service.
