What is Modifier 60?

Modifier 60 tells insurance payers that the surgical field was altered by trauma, infection, previous surgery, or other conditions that made the procedure substantially more difficult.

When to Use Modifier 60

• The surgical field is significantly altered
• Extensive scar tissue or adhesions are present
• Previous surgery increases procedural difficulty
• Documentation supports the additional complexity

Billing Example

A surgeon performs a procedure in an area with extensive scar tissue from prior surgeries, requiring significantly more operative time and effort. Modifier 60 may be appended when appropriate.
